Background

Asthma exacerbation is a cause of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population.

Methods

In this cross-sectional study we compared them with recordings of children with Sleep Disordered Breathing (Sleep Disordered Breathing) and controls.

Average overnight baseline oxygen level was lower in asthma patients than in comparison groups (96.4-96.7%)

They spent more time in SpO 2 < 95 % and had similar ODI3 with the two other groups (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001 for asthma versus Sleep Disordered Breathing and asthma versus control group respectively).

Moreover, in patients with asthma a higher spot SpO 2 was documented during the day, versus night-time basal SpO 2 .

This study highlights that clinical improvement precedes SpO 2 improvement in asthmatic patients. A clinical review 48 h post-discharge is advisable.

Nocturnal basal SpO 2 is lower than daytime spot SpO 2 , which should be taken under consideration in implementation of guidelines.
