Purpose

To evaluate the effect of Intense pulsed light (intense pulsed light) therapy on eyelid microbiota in symptomatic contact lens (contact lens) wearers.

Methods

With Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire (CLDEQ-8) score ≥ 12 were enrolled and received two intense pulsed light/sham treatments at three-week intervals.

Eighteen contact lens wearers completed the study (intense pulsed light: n = 10; 90% female, aged 35.3 ± 13.2 years; sham: n = 8; 50% female, aged 28.9 ± 6.3 years).

However, by day 90, bacterial count had increased relative to day 42 and was partially rebounded towards baseline numbers.

The sham group showed no significant changes in bacterial load at any follow-up time point.
