Background

To investigate the effectiveness of an artificial intelligence (artificial intelligence)-based computer-aided detection (computer-aided detection) system in identifying incidental lung cancer on cardiac computed tomography (computed tomography) scans and to compare its performance with that of radiologists.

Methods

In this retrospective, multicenter study, 652 cardiac computed tomography scans from 581 patients subsequently diagnosed with lung cancer were analyzed.

AI-CAD showed a higher detection rate in identifying small, peripheral, and part-solid lesions (all P < 0.001).

Among lung cancer cases missed by radiologists, 94.2% experienced diagnostic delays of > 100 days, with 78.2% leading to stage progression.

AI-CAD identified 58.5% of these diagnostic delays.
