Latine communities in the United States experience disproportionate exposure to trauma, yet gendered patterns of trauma and their relationship to posttraumatic stress disorder (posttraumatic stress disorder) symptoms remain understudied.

An independent-samples t-test indicated no significant gender differences in posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms with a negligible effect size (d = 0.11).

A 2 × 4 ANCOVA (controlling for generation status) showed that trauma type significantly predicted posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms (partial η 2 = 0.036), whereas gender (partial η 2 = 0.002) and the gender × trauma interaction (η 2 = 0.009) were not significant.

Conclusion

These findings indicate that while posttraumatic stress disorder severity may not differ by gender, gender is associated with differential exposure to trauma types, and trauma type, particularly interpersonal violence, is the primary predictor of posttraumatic stress disorder symptom severity in this sample.
