Background

Acute cholecystitis affects approximately 200,000 hospitalizations annually in the United States, and emergency cholecystectomy is its definitive treatment.

Methods

This retrospective cohort study used the National Inpatient Sample (National Inpatient Sample) from January 2018 through December 2022.

Among 194,787 admissions (weekday, 73.2%; weekend, 26.8%), in-hospital mortality was 0.62% in weekday and 0.53% in weekend patients.

After adjustment, weekend admission was not associated with in-hospital mortality (aOR 0.87; 95% CI, 0.75-1.00; p = 0.06).
