Background

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis uveitis (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis uveitis) can progress without obvious clinical signs and cause permanent damage if left untreated, therefore early detection through regular screening is crucial for managing the disease.

Purpose

This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of uveitis and factors associated with uveitis in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis) patients.

Methods

The medical records of patients with a diagnosis of non-systemic Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis who were under the care of the Department of Paediatric Rheumatology at Ankara University between June 2010 and June 2024 were reviewed retrospectively.

n = 144 patients
18.1%
Results
18.1%
in this group, uveitis screening detected eye inflammation in about 1 in 5 children
n = 144 patients
More results

12 patients (46.2%) with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis uveitis experienced complications and 3 of these patients had complications at the time of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis uveitis diagnosis.

More results

The group who experienced Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis uveitis was characterised with female sex (p = 0.048), anti-nuclear antibody (anti-nuclear antibody) positivity (p = 0.039), younger age at the time of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis diagnosis (p = 0.014), and more frequent articular flare-ups (p = 0.014).

Conclusion · 1 of 2

Uveitis may present with an insidious clinical course in patients with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

Conclusion · 2 of 2

Particularly, early onset of the disease, female gender, positive anti-nuclear antibody status, and articular relapses should be considered warning signs for uveitis.
