Background

IMPORTANCE: Visual impairment (visual impairment) affects approximately 7 million individuals in the US and is associated with adverse outcomes; cardiovascular disease (cardiovascular disease) risk factors and nonmedical drivers of health (NMDOH) may contribute.

Purpose

To estimate visual impairment prevalence and assess its associations with cardiovascular disease risk factors in Hispanic/Latino adults in the US.

Methods

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from SOL Ojos, an ancillary study of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL).

n = 3288 participants

Visual impairment prevalence varied across Hispanic/Latino backgrounds in men (habitual visual acuity visual impairment range, 4.1% [95% CI, 1.8%-6.4%] to 16.9% [95% CI, 11.6%-22.2%]; uncorrected refractive error range, 2.3% [95% CI, 0.6%-4.0%] to 13.5% [95% CI, 8.1%-18.9%]) and was highest among Mexican men.
