Background

Only one previous study investigated ultrasonographic (ultrasonographic) changes at peripheral entheses and joints in patients with acute anterior uveitis (acute anterior uveitis) and no study has used these data in recognizing unknown spondyloarthropathy as defined by ASAS criteria.

Purpose

The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of ultrasonographic enthesis and joint abnormalities in a consecutive series of granulomatous uveitis and non-granulomatous patients and to use these data in recognizing unknown spondyloarthropathy as defined by ASAS criteria.

Methods

A total of 152 consecutive patients diagnosed with acute anterior uveitis [103 non-granulomatous (42 B27-, 61 B27+) and 49 granulomatous uveitis] from the Immunology Eye Unit (AUSL-IRCCS Reggio Emilia, Italy) were enrolled in this study.

“
Conclusion · 1 of 2

Acute entheseal lesions and erosions are associated with non-granulomatous, without apparent influence of HLA-B27 positivity.

Conclusion · 2 of 2

ultrasonographic examination helps to recognize previously unknown spondyloarthropathy and to define the disease phenotype of patients, moving toward more personalized treatment.
