OphthalmologyCohort study

Poor postnatal weight gain was linked to higher odds of retinopathy of prematurity.

Purpose

The objective of this study is to determine the role of IGF-1 and postnatal growth failure (postnatal growth failure) in predicting retinopathy of prematurity in an Indian cohort.

Methods

Prospective observational cohort study.

Results

poor early weight gain roughly doubled the odds of eye damage

OR 2.07 (95% CI 1.04 to 4.11)
null = 11.044.11
CI excludes the null - significant
More results

The median IGF-1 levels were lower in the babies with any stage retinopathy of prematurity (18.82 ng/ml) than in no retinopathy of prematurity (28.81 ng/ml) ( P = 0.002).

More results

The area under the curve of receiver operating characteristic for both IGF-1 levels and postnatal weight gain was > 0.5, implying good diagnostic accuracy in predicting retinopathy of prematurity.

“
Conclusion · 1 of 2

Poor weight gain rate, postnatal growth failure, and low IGF-1 are important predictors for retinopathy of prematurity and help to identify the neonates with poor postnatal development.

Conclusion · 2 of 2

Such babies should therefore be followed meticulously during retinopathy of prematurity screening.
