Background

Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are commonly used for analgesia in dogs with spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defects (spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defects).

Methods

Medical records of dogs with spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defects (2018-2024) were reviewed.

n = 186 SCCEDs in 170 dogs

A total of 186 spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defects in 170 dogs met inclusion criteria; 136 were treated with an oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and 50 without.

More results

The median number of procedures required before healing was one (range: 1-3) in both the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and no-non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs groups (p = 0.210).

No cases developed stromal melting, descemetocoele or perforation.

Conclusion

Short-term oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs therapy did not delay epithelial healing or increase complications, supporting their safe use in dogs with spontaneous chronic corneal epithelial defects.
