Purpose

To test whether pediatric obesity is associated with inner retinal structure and intraocular pressure (IOP) changes, and whether insulin resistance (insulin resistance) is associated with additional ophthalmic differences within the obesity subgroup.

Methods

This cross-sectional study enrolled 202 children aged 6-18 years, including 92 with obesity and 110 controls.

In the primary age- and sex-adjusted models, obesity was associated with higher IOP and lower average, temporal, and nasal retinal nerve fiber layer thickness.

After additional adjustment for axial length and spherical equivalent, the association with higher IOP remained robust, whereas retinal nerve fiber layer differences were attenuated; only the temporal retinal nerve fiber layer difference remained statistically significant.
