Background

Retinopathy of prematurity (retinopathy of prematurity) is the leading cause of blindness in preterm infants.

Purpose

Retinopathy of prematurity (retinopathy of prematurity) is the leading cause of blindness in preterm infants.

Methods

A retrospective cohort study was conducted on premature infants who met the following inclusion criteria: infants with gestational age (gestational age) ≤ 32 weeks and very low birth weight (very low birth weight) who were admitted to the Neonatology-Preterm Department of Emergency Pediatric Hospital Cluj-Napoca during a two-year period (from 1 January 2023 to 31 December 2024).

n = 20 cases
Results

getting a blood transfusion made this eye disease much more likely

AOR 4.81 (95% CI 1.37 to 16.85)
null = 11.3716.85
CI excludes the null - significant
More results

Of them, 48 developed retinopathy of prematurity with an incidence of 38.7%.

In 20 cases, retinopathy of prematurity required treatment.

More results

To adjust for clinical illness, a binary logistic regression model was created, including known risk factors for retinopathy of prematurity and illness severity (gestational age, severe respiratory distress syndrome, and early- and late-onset sepsis) that were closely related to the risk of retinopathy of prematurity development.

“
Conclusion

Red blood cell transfusions increased the risk of retinopathy of prematurity.
