Purpose

To examine changes in macular ganglion cell layer (ganglion cell layer) thickness over five years in a community-based birth cohort of children without ophthalmic disease.

Methods

This prospective study included 660 children without ophthalmic disease from the Copenhagen Child Cohort 2000 Eye Study.

In boys, the retina's nerve cell layer thickened by about this much over five years.

In girls, ganglion cell layer thickness was stable or slightly decreased (-0.4%), with significance in four of seven measurements.

Baseline axial length (axial length) differed significantly between sexes (23.47/22.89 mm in boys/girls, p < 0.0001), as did axial growth between visits (Δaxial length, 0.19/0.42 mm in boys/girls, p < 0.0001).
