Background

Meralgia paresthetica (MP) is a recognized complication following bariatric surgery, yet its risk factors remain poorly defined.

Purpose

This study aimed to investigate the incidence of MP after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in patients with obesity and to identify its independent risk factors.

Methods

Were divided into MP and non-MP groups based on postoperative occurrence.

n = 2,635 patients

higher body weight index slightly increases odds of thigh nerve pain after stomach surgery

The incidence of postoperative MP was 9.86‰ (26/2635).

Comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension were not significantly different between groups.

Conclusion

Postoperative MP is a notable complication after LSG. A higher preoperative BMI is a strong and independent risk factor, which should be considered in perioperative risk stratification and prevention strategies.
