Background

Delayed gastric conduit emptying (delayed gastric conduit emptying) is a common and functionally significant complication following oesophagectomy, yet its pathophysiology is incompletely understood.

Purpose

This study aimed to determine the incidence of early and late delayed gastric conduit emptying using standardised criteria and to identify independent predictors for each.

Methods

With late delayed gastric conduit emptying were further classified according to University Hospital Zurich's pathophysiological framework.

The incidence of early and late delayed gastric conduit emptying was 19.3% and 19.6%, respectively.

Independent predictors of late delayed gastric conduit emptying included gastro-oesophageal junction tumour location (Oesophageal OR 0.37, p = 0.013) and the occurrence of postoperative complications (OR 4.67, p = 0.006).
