Background

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (abdominal aortic aneurysm) and peripheral arterial disease (peripheral arterial disease) share common risk factors and may co-exist in patients undergoing abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

Purpose

This study aims to evaluate whether concurrent peripheral arterial disease is associated with adverse clinical outcomes following abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

Methods

This was a single-centre retrospective propensity matched analysis involving patients undergoing infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm repair at a single UK centre (2009-2022).

n = 1703 patients

Results

Peripheral arterial disease nearly quadruples the odds of needing reintervention after open repair

Of 1703 patients who underwent infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, 90 had undergone intervention for peripheral arterial disease.

No significant association between concurrent peripheral arterial disease and endoleak was identified, nor any significant association with mortality.
