Background

Post-traumatic seizures have been shown to occur in patients with traumatic brain injury (traumatic brain injury).

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to characterize seizure rates among patients with mild and moderate traumatic brain injury with intracranial hemorrhage (intracranial hemorrhage) on computed tomography (computed tomography), and to generate hypotheses regarding the potential role of seizure prophylaxis in this population.

Methods

This retrospective descriptive study included patients from a large Level I Trauma Center who were admitted with traumatic brain injury between January 2019 and August 2021.

Conclusion

These findings suggest a high seizure burden in moderate traumatic brain injury (Glasgow Coma Scale 9-12) with intracranial hemorrhage compared to mild traumatic brain injury (Glasgow Coma Scale 13-15) with intracranial hemorrhage, and support the need for prospective, risk-stratified trials to evaluate seizure prophylaxis in moderate traumatic brain injury.
