Evaluating the role of youth-onset diabetes mellitus in the context of food insecurity and preventive care: a repeated cross-sectional study using propensity score weighted machine learning analysis.

In the propensity score weighting analysis of 66 560 adolescents, 432 had youth-onset diabetes mellitus.

Among adolescents with preventive care visits, both mild food insecurity (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.37; p=0.0126) and moderate-to-severe food insecurity (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.46 to 1.92; p<0.0001) were associated with higher odds of diabetes mellitus.

Among those without preventive care visits, food insecurity was associated with lower odds of having a reported diabetes mellitus diagnosis, especially in the moderate-to-severe food insecurity group (OR 0.11, 95% CI 0.03 to 0.35; p=0.0002).
