A preoperative reduction in rectus femoris activity of the involved limb indicated that there might be compensations in movement patterns among those with patellofemoral instability.

At the time of return to sport after medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction, vastus medialis discrepancies suggested that there might be a muscle imbalance after surgery and continue through physical therapy.

A greater emphasis on vastus medialis training may prove beneficial during the rehabilitation process and help to prevent the reduction in activity observed at the time of return to sport.
