Purpose

To evaluate whether parental resolution of infants' congenital heart disease (congenital heart disease) diagnosis contributes to parent-infant bonding above and beyond psychological distress during hospitalization in a pediatric cardiac ICU (pediatric cardiac ICU).

Methods

Pediatric cardiac ICU; Hadassah University Medical Center, Israel.

n = 37 infants

Depressive and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms correlated with poorer resolution (r = -0.47; p < 0.001 and r = -0.51; p < 0.001) and more impaired bonding (r = 0.44; p = 0.001 and r = 0.48; p < 0.001).

Controlling for depressive and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and diagnosis timing (prenatally vs. postpartum), resolution predicted healthier bonding (β = -0.35;i p = 0.032; ΔR2 = 0.08).
