Background

Optic neuritis (optic neuritis) is a common manifestation of multiple sclerosis (multiple sclerosis), aquaporin-4-IgG seropositive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (AQP4+NMOSD), and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD).

Purpose

In this study, we aimed to examine the relative contribution of ganglion cell and inner plexiform thinning to overall GCIPL thinning in MS-optic neuritis, AQP4-optic neuritis, and MOGAD-optic neuritis eyes.

Methods

For the cross-sectional analysis, multiple sclerosis, AQP4+NMOSD, and MOGAD participants with a history of optic neuritis >6 months prior and healthy controls (healthy controls) underwent retinal imaging.

n = 66 eyes

eyes that lost more overall thickness also lost relatively more ganglion cells than inner plexiform layer

In the cross-sectional cohort, ganglion cell and inner plexiform volumes were lower in AQP4-optic neuritis (n = 30 eyes) and MOGAD-optic neuritis (n = 47 eyes), as compared with MS-optic neuritis (n = 66 eyes), but did not differ between AQP4-optic neuritis and MOGAD-optic neuritis eyes.

More results

AQP4-optic neuritis and MOGAD-optic neuritis eyes had a lower ganglion cell/GCIPL ratio compared with MS-optic neuritis, with no significant difference between AQP4-optic neuritis and MOGAD-optic neuritis.

Conclusion

Our findings may help shed light into dynamics of inner retinal layer atrophy after optic neuritis.
