Choroidal melanoma shows lower choroidal vessel area density than nevi.

OCT Angiography-Based Quantitative Choroidal Vasculature Analysis in Choroidal Melanomas and Nevi.

Tekla Kurdiani … Tobias Kiefer
Ophthalmology science · 2026
Purpose

The purpose of this study was to differentiate both entities via OCT angiography using an open-source vascular analysis software (OCTAVA), using quantitative choroidal vasculature analysis.

Methods

Retrospective case-control study.

n = 30 patients
Results

melanomas had fewer visible tiny blood vessels than nevi

30.46%
CM vessel area density
37.1%
CN vessel area density
More results

Thirty patients with choroidal melanoma and 30 patients with choroidal nevus could be included in the study.

Receiver operating curve analysis demonstrated good diagnostic performance for vessel area density, vessel length density, and total vessel length (area under the curve: 0.81-0.86).

Conclusion · 1 of 2

OCT angiography using open-source software quantitative choroidal vasculature analysis may play a future role in objective differentiation between choroidal melanoma and choroidal nevus.

Conclusion · 2 of 2

Future role of OCT angiography in multimodal imaging for melanocytic choroidal tumors must, however, be further validated in larger, prospective trials and across different, preferably commercially available OCT platforms.
