OphthalmologyRandomized trial

About 13% of eyelids had trachomatous trichiasis recur within a year after surgery.

Purpose

To evaluate predictive factors for postoperative trachomatoustrichiasis (postoperative trachomatoustrichiasis) following trachomatous trichiasis (trachomatous trichiasis) surgery in an atrachoma-endemic setting.

Methods

Secondary analysis of the FLuorometholone as Adjunctive MEdicaltherapy for trachomatous trichiasis surgery (FLAME) trial for comparing fluorometholone 0.1% vs placebo as adjunctive therapy for trachomatous trichiasis surgery.

n = 2398 participants
Results

more checks and worse eye symptoms before surgery raised the risk of lashes coming back

AUC 0.74 (95% CI 0.72 to 0.77)
null = 00.720.77
CI excludes the null - significant
More results

These predictors and surgeons predicted postoperative trachomatoustrichiasis with an area under the curve of 0.74 (95% confidence interval: 0.72 to 0.77).

Conclusion · 1 of 2

Several baseline demographic and ocular characteristics indicating trachomatous trichiasis severity are predictive of postoperative trachomatoustrichiasis.

Conclusion · 2 of 2

Using these findings to identify high-risk individuals can inform clinical decision-making/patientcounselling.
