Background

Cognitive impairment, frailty, and systemic comorbidity burden are common in elderly patients with glaucoma and may influence both visual field (visual field) performance and glaucoma severity.

Purpose

This study investigated the associations of comprehensive geriatric assessment (comprehensive geriatric assessment) parameters, including Mini-Cog, G8, and Age-Adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index (ACCI), with visual field sensitivity and visual field reliability indices in glaucoma patients.

Methods

This retrospective cross-sectional study included 1125 eyes of 622 glaucoma patients who underwent Humphrey visual field testing and comprehensive geriatric assessment at a tertiary referral center.

n = 1125 eyes
-0.52
Results
-0.52
higher comorbidity burden linked to worse central visual field score
n = 1125 eyes
More results

In univariate analyses, lower Mini-Cog and G8 scores and higher ACCI scores were associated with several visual field sensitivity and reliability indices.

Lower G8 scores and higher ACCI scores were independently associated with increased FN rates, whereas higher G8 scores were associated with increased FP rates.

“
Conclusion · 1 of 3

Systemic comorbidity burden, assessed using ACCI, was independently associated with both glaucomatous functional impairment and selected visual field reliability indices.

Conclusion · 2 of 3

Frailty, assessed using G8, was associated with visual field reliability but not visual field sensitivity.

Conclusion · 3 of 3

Although cognitive function measured by Mini-Cog was associated with visual field parameters in univariate analyses, these associations were not retained after multivariable adjustment.
