Ophthalmology · 2026
Purpose

To identify donor, lenticule preparation, recipient, and operative factors associated with 1-year Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty) success in the Diabetes Endothelial Keratoplasty Study (Diabetes Endothelial Keratoplasty Study).

Methods

Individuals undergoing descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty to treat corneal endothelial dysfunction at 28 clinical sites.

n = 78 cases
HR 4.0
Results
HR 4.0
Eyes with surgical complications during the transplant had about 4-fold higher risk of graft failure.
n = 78 cases
More results

Of 1421 descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty grafts, 1374 (97%) were clear at 1 year, 32 were primary donor failures, 12 were early failures, and 3 were late failures.

“
Conclusion · 1 of 2

Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty was highly successful across a wide range of donor, lenticule preparation, recipient, and surgical technique variations.

Conclusion · 2 of 2

Not surprisingly, graft success was lower in cases with operative complications.
