Purpose

To evaluate the role of intraoperative display of pre-operative digital enface optical coherence tomography (optical coherence tomography) in guiding the epiretinal membrane (epiretinal membrane) peeling, without vital dye staining.

Methods

In this prospective interventional study, patients undergoing epiretinal membrane/inner limiting membrane (inner limiting membrane) peeling were included.

n = 14 eyes
11
Results
11
out of 14 cases
most membranes on the retina were very sticky when peeled with the inner layer
n = 14 eyes
More results

In all cases, the identified enface area resulted suitable to create the peel flap at the first attempt without staining.

Greater epiretinal membrane adherence correlated with increased likelihood of simultaneous peeling.

More results

A significant positive association between epiretinal membrane stage and adhesion grade was evident with a moderate-to-strong monotonic relationship.

Conclusion · 1 of 2

The intraoperative display of preoperative digital enface optical coherence tomography proved feasible for identifying a suitable site for epiretinal membrane flap initiation.

Conclusion · 2 of 2

Greater epiretinal membrane adhesion was significantly associated with the intraoperative occurrence of simultaneous epiretinal membrane/inner limiting membrane peeling, suggesting that epiretinal membrane adhesion may represent a potential imaging biomarker that warrants validation in larger prospective studies.
