Background

Functional vulnerability may identify older adults hospitalized with Crohn's disease flares who are at increased risk for adverse outcomes, but its prognostic significance in this setting remains incompletely defined.

Methods

Coded only for nonspecific weakness or fatigue were excluded from the functional vulnerability cohort.

n = 2720 patients
Results

weaker physical function, more likely to die within 30 days of admission

Among 18,420 eligible patients, 2846 met criteria for functional vulnerability, and 15,574 did not.

After matching, 2720 patients remained in each cohort.

Conclusion

Administratively defined functional vulnerability identified through diagnostic coding was associated with worse short-term outcomes among older adults hospitalized with Crohn's disease flares.
