Background

Leukoerythroblastosis (LEB), defined as the concurrent detection of immature granulocytes (IG) and nucleated red blood cells (NRBC) in peripheral blood, may reflect profound bone marrow stress in sepsis.

Methods

This single-center retrospective cohort study comprised adult intensive care unit (ICU) patients with sepsis between April 2011 and March 2023.

Results

Patients with leukoerythroblastosis had a 1.9-fold higher hazard of 90-day death.

Among ICU patients with sepsis who survived for 7 days after ICU admission, LEB identified within 7 days after ICU admission was independently associated with increased 90-day mortality.
