IMAGING CHARACTERISTICS OF MACULAR NEOVASCULARIZATION IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC CENTRAL SEROUS CHORIORETINOPATHY.

Retina (Philadelphia, Pa.) · 2026
Purpose

To study the morphologic characteristics of Type1 macular neovascularization (macular neovascularization) in eyes with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (central serous chorioretinopathy) using optical coherence tomography (optical coherence tomography) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT angiography).

Methods

With chronic central serous chorioretinopathy and secondary Type 1 macular neovascularization were included in the study.

n = 19 patients
Results

most new blood vessel growths in the macula were loosely structured

indistinct
65%
tangled
30%
sea-fan
5%
More results

All eyes exhibited neovascular flow signal on OCT angiography images.

Nineteen eyes (95%) showed flat-irregular pigment epithelium detachment (flat irregular pigment epithelium detachment [FIPED]).

Subretinal fluid (subretinal fluid) was detected in 90% of patients with no intraretinal fluid.

More results

Membranes were mostly located at the subfoveal area (65%).

Conclusion · 1 of 2

Neovascular membranes of chronic central serous chorioretinopathy sprout under the retinal pigment epithelium within the macular area (Type 1 macular neovascularization) inside an FIPED overlying pachyvessels.

Conclusion · 2 of 2

Morphologic characteristics assessed by OCT angiography of loose and indistinct pattern improve our understanding of vessel formation and maturation in patients with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy and might be valuable to guide therapy.
